Townsend's Mike Walker Wins Double Gold with Team Ontario and Toronto Batmen
For Mike Walker, 2025 has been a summer to remember. The Townsend native was part of a history-making run at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he helped Team Ontario Softball Mens Softball capture gold with a hard-fought 4–2 win over Quebec in the championship final.
Walker played a key role as Ontario’s catcher in that gold medal game, steadying the defense and handling the pressure of a rematch against a Quebec team that had beaten Ontario earlier in the week. This time, Ontario responded with resilience and poise, flipping the script when it mattered most.
At the plate, Walker was one of Ontario’s most consistent bats. He hit an impressive .550 for the tournament, adding three doubles, a triple, and a home run to his stat line. His offensive production kept Ontario’s momentum alive throughout the week and gave his team the edge they needed to bring home the top prize.
The victory was especially sweet as it added to the growing legacy of Ontario athletes in softball at the Canada Games, while giving Walker a personal highlight that he’ll carry throughout his career.
No sooner had he returned from Newfoundland than Walker was back on the diamond, this time in Kitchener for the U23 National Championships with his club team, the Toronto Batmen. Proving his ability to rise to the occasion yet again, Walker helped lead the Batmen all the way to the championship game. In a tight 3–2 final against Tavistock, the Batmen came out on top, giving Walker his second gold medal in just a few short weeks.
Now, as the celebrations settle down, Walker is preparing for the next chapter in his journey. He’s heading into his second season of college ball with Lambton College, where he’ll bring with him the experience of competing — and winning — on some of the biggest stages in Canadian softball.
For Simcoe and the Norfolk sports community, Walker’s accomplishments are a point of pride. From the local diamonds where his career began to the national spotlight of the Canada Games and the U23 Nationals, he continues to show the potential of athletes raised in small-town Ontario.
